WaterAid

Clean water is something most of us take for granted, but over a billion people do not have access to it, and over two fifths of the world's population do not have somewhere safe and clean to go to the toilet.
Woman drinking water Many women and children in the world's poorest countries spend hours each day walking miles to collect water. This water is usually dirty and unsafe to drink, but they have no alternative. Carrying heavy water containers is an exhausting task, which takes up valuable time and energy, preventing women from doing other work and stopping children from going to school.
Together with local organisations WaterAid uses practical solutions to provide safe water to the poorest people in 17 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific region. So that health benefits are maximised, it does this through projects that combine domestic water supply with sanitation and hygiene education.
WaterAid works with individuals and families in their communities, paying special attention to the most vulnerable people, to help them set up, operate and maintain their own projects so that they last long into the future.
People's lives are instantly changed when they are able to collect clean water close to their home. WaterAid believes that access to safe water and sanitation underpins health, education and livelihoods, and forms the first, essential step in overcoming poverty.
WaterAid also seeks to influence the policies of other key organisations, such as governments, to secure and protect the right of poor people to safe, affordable water and sanitation services.
Nine year old Nsomah is from Asamponbisi village in Ghana where WaterAid's partner Rural Aid has helped the community to build a new water supply.
"Before we had the pump we went to the stream to fetch water. There were animals drinking there too. The water would hurt my stomach. Now I'm pleased I don’t have to go there any more, I never visit there. I am happy with the new water.

Before I had diarrhoea and I had to go to hospital and stay there for five days. It was all new to me. It was big and strange and there were lots of new people. I had to get injections and it was scary. I missed school while I was in hospital. I enjoy school so much. When I am older I want to be a doctor because I want to help other people who are sick."
In Ghana:
  • £5 pays for one bag of cement for a latrine slab
  • £25 pays for the tools for a hand-dug well
  • £100 pays for a rope pump and its installation cost
WaterAid's vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. We hope that you can share this vision.
Thank you to everyone for taking the time to support the Ricky Road Run and WaterAid.
