Derrick Williams MBE
|
|
| |
|
| Derrick Williams, the
founder and past-chairman of the Ricky Road Run, has
received an MBE for charitable services in the Queen's
Birthday Honours list. |
|
| Derrick, who has worked
at Three Valleys Water in Hatfield for over 25 years,
has put in 21 years of support for WaterAid as a volunteer,
20 years arranging and chairing the committee for the
Ricky Road Run, and has set up and runs the charity
KitAid. |
|
| WaterAid is the water
and sanitation development charity that helps people
in Africa and Asia, to bring safe, clean water supplies
to their villages. Derrick was responsible for forming
the Three Valleys Water WaterAid committee, which helps
raise funds for the charity through staff and customers,
and which he chaired for many years. During that time
Derrick gave over 100 presentations to local organisations
about the charity. |
|
| Derrick, who is a passionate
football fan, set up KitAid in 1998 after he visited
Tanzania as a volunteer with WaterAid. He collects donations
of unwanted football kit, and to date over 2000 kits
have been sent to children and adults in developing
countries across the world. As a result of the overwhelming
response from supporters following an appeal with Watford
FC, KitAid has taken donations of other kits including
a large donation from Surrey County Cricket Club. |
|
| Derrick started the
Ricky Road Run 1984, and was chair of the organising
committee until 2003. In that time the run raised over
£83,000 for a number of charities. |
|
| Derrick, who is a Project
Manager in Customer Services at Three Valleys Water,
said: "I am delighted to receive the award and would
like to thank all those who have encouraged me and supported
the events over the last 21 years. It has been very
rewarding and also great fun.". |
